The Importance of Recovery Time
By Dr. Naeemah Ruffin
Let's take a moment to focus on the importance of recovery time for ballet dancers. Recovery time is as important as training and encompasses everything that happens after classes and performances. Recovery time is important because it allows the dancer’s body to recharge physically and mentally by replenishing their body’s energy stores, repairing muscle fibers and reducing inflammation. After a performance, the recovery phase occurs during the first 2 weeks after the time of performance or the first one to two days after regular classes. Dancers can choose an “active” or “passive” recovery. Passive recovery decreases training loads or takes a short time off to rest completely. Active recovery incorporates light cross-training like Pilates or other activities such as going to the gym, biking, or swimming. Additionally, catching up on sleep enables the body to deeply repair muscle fibers. The most successful athletes, especially in prodigy sports, take 3-4 weeks off a couple of times a year. So, scheduling these breaks can go a long way in making your dance dreams come true.
